Investigation of Shrinkage Defect in Castings by Quantitative Ishikawa Diagram

Abstract: Metal casting process involves processes such as pattern making, moulding and melting etc. Casting defects occur due to combination of various processes even though efforts are taken to control them. The first step in the defect analysis is to identify the major casting defect among the many casting defects. Then the analysis is to be made to find the root cause of the particular defect. Moreover, it is especially difficult to identify the root causes of the defect. Therefore, a systematic method is required t… Show more

“…In order to identify the causes of porosity cluster the Ishikawa diagram and 5Why method were used. These methods are popular and are described in the literature of study (Bilsel and Lin, 2012;Chokkalingam et al, 2017;Pacana et al 2014;2015;2019;Salvador and Goldfarb, 2004;Benjamin et al, 2015;Braglia et al 2017;Malindzak et al, 2017). In the main part of the diagram the nonconformity was noted (porosity cluster) and the potential causes these problems were noted in the next element of the diagram.…”

“…Fig. 2 presents the Ishikawa diagram [9][10][11][12] for the problem of cracks, inaccurate casting of the shell. This diagram was implemented on the basis of brainstorming carried out among the employees of the analyzed plant, which take an active part in the preparation and implementation of the helmet's production.…”
