Investigation of single and joint fumigant insecticidal action of citruspeel oil components

Abstract: Following gas chromatographic analysis of citruspeel oils, 30 components of these oils were tested against Callosobruchus rnaculatus (F.). Several compounds (22), including the major component of all citruspeel oils--( +)-limonene-were found to be bioactive, having a strong vapour insecticidal activity. These components and some of their isomers were shown to have varying levels of activity (a-terpineol, 24-h LC,, 4.05 pl litre-' to n-tridecane, LC,, 13.3 p1 litre-I), but no single component could account for … Show more

“…Inhibitory effect of monoterpenoids (i.e., limonene, linalool, polegon, camphor, etc.) has been reported previously on acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity (Don Pedro, 1996;López and Pascual-Villalobos, 2010;Orhan et al, 2008). Moreover, some monoterpenes have a critical rule in inhibition of cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenases (Choi et al, 2006;Ketoh et al, 2002;Lee et al, 2001).…”

“…It is frequently noted that the "original" complex essential oils are considerably more efficacious than the pure compounds derived from them. Examples include oil of anise (from which trans-anethole is derived), rosemary oil, and various citrus oils (8,10,17). Identifying such synergist compounds within complex mixtures may allow for the development of more effective control agents as well as the use of smaller absolute amounts in the mixture to achieve satisfactory levels of efficacy.…”

“…Several studies were published on the fumigation or contact toxicity of pure monoterpenoid constituents against various insect species (20)(21)(22)(23). However, no report was found in the literature on the topical toxicity of monoterpenes and oils against Colorado potato beetle.…”
