Investigation of sodium alginate as a candidate retarder of magnesium phosphate cement: Hydration properties and its retarding mechanism

“…Sodium alginate is a byproduct after the extraction of iodine and mannitol from kelp or sargassum whose molecules are composed of β- d -mannuronic acid (M) and α- l -guluronic acid (G). When there are divalent cations such as Ca 2+ and Sr 2+ , the sodium ion on the G unit undergoes an ion exchange reaction with divalent cations, so that the G units are stacked to form cross-linked network hydrogels. Since those processes occur at room temperature without the requirements of heating and complicated instruments, it would be possible to develop a simple and integrated experimental kit to prepare the hydrogels. The kit contains all the necessary things and can be used to conduct experiments easily at many occasions as needed, which will be discussed in sections below.…”
