Investigation of structural safety of existing masonry healthcare facilities in Turkey

Abstract: Masonry healthcare facilities in Turkey are investigated in the current research. The structural assessment of the healthcare facilities has become very important for increasing building safety. A large amount of the existing healthcare facilities are generally old buildings, constructed before engineering practices were developed making most buildings vulnerable to severe structural damage. Since healthcare facilities are costly buildings to replace, structural and non-structural assessments have economical i… Show more

“…Unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings did not perform as well as reinforced or confined masonry buildings in previous earthquakes (Klingner, 2006;Korkmaz et al, 2010Korkmaz et al, , 2012 as they are one of the weakest links of the entire building stock (Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2009). Unfortunately, many school buildings have been built by this technique.…”

“…The second isotropic criterion (Figure 8) is the Von Mises modified isotropic failure criterion proposed by Syrmakezis et al [8,25] for the modeling of masonry under biaxial stress state and has been adopted by many researchers [165][166][167][168][169][170] assuming isotropic behavior for masonry material.…”

“…Taking the fact into account that all materials under the train-induced vibration are in elastic state, so the elastic isotropic material is applied to analysis. Meanwhile, the masonry walls of the buildings are established in macro-model (Korkmaz et al, 2012). And for the wood truss in building 2, only the material property parallel to grain direction is considered.…”
