Investigation of Subsurface Characteristics by using a Vs30 Parameter and a Combination of the Hvsr and Spac Methods for Microtremor Arrays

Abstract: Palu City is an active seismic area in Indonesia due to the very active Palu-Koro fault system. The development of the city area, therefore, must consider the risks induced by the seismic activities. The risk assessment has to be supported by information on subsurface characteristics. The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the subsurface of the area by considering the value of V s30 (top 30 m shear-wave velocity). This parameter has been related to the estimation of the site's ground sh… Show more

“…It is noted that some previous studies showed that the presence of a large amplitude HVSR peak is related to a high impedance contrast between the sedimentary cover and the basement (Bard 1999;Bonnefoy-Claudet et al, 2006;Bonnefoy-Claudet et al, 2009), while a low amplitude peak is related to a lower contrast, indicating the presence of a hard soil (Woolery and Street 2002;Bonnefoy-Claudet et al, 2006;Bonnefoy-Claudet et al, 2009). It is noted that recent studies on the effects of local site characteristics on strong motions include Seyhan and Stewart (2014), Borcherdt (2015), Ji et al (2017), Pramono et al (2017), Prakoso et al (2017, as well as Mase (2018).…”

“…The Microtremor method has been widely used for site effect studies in the last decade [21], [24], [25]. Microtremor is a very small motion compared to the amplitude of an earthquake.…”

“…No slip rate estimates are available for the Palolo Fault, the Sausu Fault, and the Tokararu Fault. It is highlighted that the Palu-Koro Fault moved with a magnitude of 7.4 on 28 September 2018, causing a permanent sinistral offset up to about 5 m. The local site condition in Palu City identified by Pramono et.al [10] showed the deep of the engineering bedrock and site classification.…”
