The concentrations of Particulate Matter (PM) were determined in tropical wetlands air basin of Cawthorne Channel, Awoba and Krakrama. The sampling was performed with well calibrated equipment (A MultiRAE PLUS (PGM -50), a programmable Multi Gas monitor with an electrochemical sensor). Parameters measured were particulate matter with 1 µm, 2.5 µm (PM 2.5 ), 7 µm (PM 7 ) , 10 µm (PM 10 ) and Total suspended particulate (TSP). Seasonal variations were displayed by all fractions of particulate matter. TSP at Cawthorne Channels was observed, with very high concentration in January (346.1 µg/m 3 ) at the upwind and (401.7 µg/m 3 ) downwind in dry season. This was followed by wet season measurement. The PM 10 results at Cawthorne Channels also showed strong seasonal variations with very high concentration in January (313.6 µg/m 3 ) at the upwind and (367.5µg/m 3 ) downwind. Of all the respirable particulate size fractions studied, allowable International Standard according to USEPA (1990), was exceeded in PM 10 and PM 7 . PM 2.5 had values that were generally below 60.0 µg/m 3 while PM 1 had values below 10.0 µg/m 3 . The TSP levels exceeded 250.0 ug/m 3 , being Nigerian National allowable limit. The respirable particulate matter had no statistical difference between the upwind and downwind directions (p< 1) 0.05 .

h i g h l i g h t sPassive sampling methodology for particulate matter in indoors is proposed. Autumn was the season that presented higher particle masses concentrations. Calcium is the major indoor PM component in rural and urban classrooms. Soil re-suspension, traffic and chalk are the main sources of indoor PM. Natural ventilation is a major contributor to the variability of indoor PM. a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c tPassive sampling methodology was applied to collect particulate matter (PM) in classrooms of urban and rural primary schools. The samples were taken during a year by passive deposition allowing the study of seasonal variability of the particles masses and chemical content. Chemical characterization of the collected particles was performed in order to measure its soluble ions content and elemental composition. To identify the main polluting sources, correlations between parameters and enrichment factors were studied. Higher particle masses concentrations were registered in autumn, with a mean of 1.54 AE 0.74 mg day À1 cm À2 . The major element in the collected particles was calcium, representing 63e73% of the analyzed mass of the particles inside the urban classrooms. In the rural cluster, calcium remained the major component but with a slight lower contribution to the overall particles composition (42e46%). The calcium source was hypothesized to be the chalk used in the blackboards of the classrooms due to a strong correlation found between Ca 2þ and SO 4 2À . Soil re-suspension, traffic and other anthropogenic emission sources were also identified. Analysis showed enrichment of the particles with Br, Ca, Zn and Sb in the urban cluster and enrichment of the same elements, except for Ca, in the rural cluster. The comparison between the results from both clusters allowed the identification of classrooms with higher particles concentrations that can indicate potential indoor air quality problems (reflected by an indoor accumulation of pollutants).

Microplastics (MP) are widely present in both outdoor and indoor environments. Extensive research has thoroughly documented the potential negative impacts of MPs on human health. This study utilized a deposited sample method for 3 weeks, with eight-hour daily exposures, using funnels and bottles to investigate the properties of MPs in the office and laboratory settings of the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Technology (FCET), Universiti Malaysia Perlis. The characteristics examined included the deposition rate, size, form, and colour of the microplastics. Samples were collected at three different heights. The samples underwent pre-treatment procedures, such as physical counting and categorization (size, colour and shape). Micro-Raman analysis was performed to determine the primary polymer types. The deposition rate in the office was found to be 4,960 counts/(m2.h), while the rate in the laboratory was 6,940 counts/(m2.h). Human activities and the appearance of synthetic materials, especially from textiles, play a big role in the deposition rate of MPs in the environment. During the day, the rates were higher than at night. The results of the study showed that indoor MPs come in many different colours, with transparent and black being the most common. About 42% of the size range of fibrous MPs was between 200 µm and 2000 µm, and more than 15% of the particles were between 20 µm and 200 µm. Most of the time, fragments were smaller than strands. The most abundance polymers detected in both rooms were polycarbonate (PC), pigments and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).
