Investigation of the applicability of Design for X tools during design concept evolution: a literature review

Abstract: Despite the availability of numerous "Design for X (DfX)" concepts/methods, their application is challenging for two reasons: • because methods have been developed with different foci (e.g., manufacturing vs. quality), it is difficult to know how different methods complement each other • in what sequence and where at the design stage they should be applied. We address this challenge with a review of DfX methods with recommended design stages for their use from the published literature. We also provide a themat… Show more

“…A recent review by Chiu and Kremer (2011b) identified 12 different tools (guideline sets, metrics, mathematical models, and methods) for Design for Environment (DfE) and DfS. It was readily evident, however, that these methods focus on environmental sustainability and are deficient in incorporating economic sustainability.…”

“…The major aim of design efficiency is to decrease the cost and lead time of a product, as well as to maintain its quality [54]. The DFA by Boothroyd et al [20] was selected to ensure the consistency Although almost all the impact categories were dominated by the manufacturing stage, there were still many categories that occurred at the use stage.…”

“…and Rungtusanatham, Forza, and Salvador (2005) summarise relevant papers and propose research agenda for CP-SCD such as the need for an integrative framework. Chiu and Kremer (2011) provide a detailed review of the 'Design-for-X' PD methods for product value chain and also suggest the need of an integrative framework. process, SC, organisation, strategy) and propose research methods in gaining understanding of the 3DCE practices.…”
