Investigation of the Effect of Various Additives on the Clouding Behavior and Thermodynamics of Polyoxyethylene (20) Sorbitan Monooleate in Absence and Presence of Ceftriaxone Sodium Trihydrate Drug

Abstract: Measurements of the cloud point (CP) of non-ionic surfactant polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monooleate (Tween 80) were performed in aqueous solution and in the presence of ceftriaxone sodium trihydrate (CFT) drug, with specific attention to CFT drug + different salts mixtures studied and discussed in detail. The CP values of Tween 80 in aqueous medium tend to reduce with enhanced concentration of surfactant. The CP values of Tween 80 solutions were also found to be decreased with increasing concentrations of dr… Show more

“…The attained value of drug‐mediated CP of TX‐100 was lower in the presence of salts as compared to their absence. Similar observations have been reported by the other researchers (Heusch, ; Rahman et al, ). Herein, the reduction of drug‐mediated CP values was higher in Na 2 SO 4 as compared to that in NaCl and NaNO 3 for both drugs utilized.…”

“…On the other hand, values of normalΔSc0 for the TX‐100 + drug (AS/NS) were found to be negative in the presence of electrolytes and the negative value decreases with the increase of the electrolyte concentration. A similar trend for nonionic surfactant + drug in the presence of salt is reported in the literature (Rahman et al, ). The obtained positive values of normalΔHc0 in water are due to disruption of the H 2 O structure in the hydrophobic portion of the amphiphilic molecules (Naqvi et al, ).…”

“…The variation of CP of aqueous TX‐100 as a function of its concentration has been studied and observed to be decreased with the increase of its concentration (Table and Fig. ) such observation of CP values of nonionic surfactant was also described earlier (Rahman et al, ). The reduction of CP in aqueous medium is probably due to large reduction in the micellar aggregation number ( N agg ) of the TX‐100 and increased intermicellar interaction.…”

“…The free energy of transfer (Gnormalm, tro), enthalpy of transfer (Hnormalm, tro), and entropy of transfer (Snormalm, tro) micelles from pure TTAB in an aqueous medium to TTAB+additives were obtained using the following relations (Rahman et al, ; Shivaji and Rakshit, ): Gnormalm,tro=Gmo0.25em()aq.additive0.25emGmo0.25em()aq. “…Over the past few decades, the study of interactions between surfactants and/or surfactants and drugs has attracted considerable interest in the fundamental and applied research arenas (Huang & Ren, ; James‐Smith, Shekhawat, Moudgil, & Shah, ; Kumar, Rub, Akram, & Kabir‐ud‐Din, ; Rahman, Khan, Rub, Hoque, & Asiri, ; Rub, Azum, & Asiri, ). This is due to widespread use of surfactants in various pharmaceutical formulations.…”
