Investigation of the leaching process of rare-earth metals from the black shale ores of greater Karatau

Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was studying the process of an acid leaching of vanadium and other valuable components from black shales of Big Karatau of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The maintenance of principal components in ore of 0,8% V2O5, 67,7% of SiO2, 3,1% of Al2O3, 0,3% of Mo, 0,2% of U3O8 and 0,05% of rare-earth metals. To provide this process was used low-temperature sintering and leaching of this type of raw material for the subsequent extraction of vanadium, uranium, molybdenum and rare earth met… Show more

“…The global market demand for rare and rare earth metals (REM) in the development and production of mineral resources is growing each year, driven by scientific and technological advancements [ [1], [2], [3]]. Scandium, a rare and expensive metal, is primarily found dispersed in nature, although it also exists in its mineral called tortveitite.…”

“…Although these ores contain up to 1% V 2 O 5 , they cannot be enriched due to chemical mobility of vanadium atoms and slight solubility of its compounds in weak acid and alkali solutions, as well as in water solutions. Well-known technologies of vanadium extraction from these ores [4][5][6][7][8], including direct vanadium extraction via pyro-and hydrometallurgical methods [9][10][11][12] and production of silicon-vanadium alloying compositions (Fe-Si-V alloys) are not always efficient [13]. Use of these ores as fluxes in phosphorus production is prospective [14,15].…”

“…In metallurgy, acid leaching of non-ferrous metals from various raw materials has become widespread. The effectiveness of this method has been proven in the extraction of copper from oxide copper ores [4], zinc from sulfide ores [5], and vanadium raw materials [6][7][8][9]. So, on the basis of this, several methods for processing the quartzite to extract vanadium have been proposed, involving roasting, sulfuric acid leaching of the cinder, and hydrolysis of the resulting solution [10]; acid leaching followed by sorption of vanadium [11]; roasting, leaching with a soda solution, filtering the resulting solution and its subsequent electrochemical treatment [12]; two-stage leaching (sulfuric acid oxidation and autoclave leaching) followed by sorption of vanadium [13,14]; direct extraction with preliminary sulfatization [15].…”
