Investigation of the natural ventilation of wind catchers with different geometries in arid region houses

Abstract: The wind catcher or wind tower is a natural ventilation technique that has been employed in the Middle East region and still until nowadays. The present paper aims to study the effect of the one-sided position of a wind catcher device against the ventilated space or building geometry and its natural ventilation performance. Four models based on the traditional design of a one-sided wind catcher are studied and compared. The study is achieved under the climatic conditions of the South-west of Algeria (arid regi… Show more

“…The result already states that increasing the volume of the exhaust hood will reduce the dissatisfaction rate of the occupants. Few researchers suggested the natural ventilation or air supply system and solar chimney for improving the thermal environment in hot and humid regions [109][110][111]. Accordingly, some researchers guided the optimization modeling such as "heating and cooling" systems for better thermal comfort conditions, which helps to save energy consumption [112][113][114][115][116].…”

“…Several researches show that recourse to local resources and intelligent designs, by integrating passive devices and effici t operation can considerably reduce the energy demand [4,5]. Among them, the research on natural ventilation techniques in hot climate, using various typologies of wind sensors in hot and arid zones; carried out by Energy Laboratory (ENARGARID) at the University of Bechar in Algeria, with cooperation of the unit of research on materials and renewable energies [6]. In the same context, another published study concerned the potential of heat exchangers techniques, system earth-air (EHAHE), used to guarantee interior comfort in hot and cold seasons [7].…”

“…This natural mode has many technical embodiments. Indeed, it can be encountered in heat exchangers, cooling towers, cooling the minuscule devices of electronic systems, metallurgies, marine engineering applications, solar collectors, air conditioning systems and so on [1][2][3][4]. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the thermal behavior of such frameworks by determining their relative controlling parameters in order to boost the heat transfer rate of these systems.…”
