Investigation of the pyramid–prism boundary of a rapidly grown KDP crystal

Abstract: To investigate the pyramid–prism (PY–PR) boundary of a rapidly grown KDP crystal, the exact position of the PY–PR boundary of an X-cut rapidly grown KDP sample is determined by measuring the refractive-index non-uniformity.

“…To evaluate the properties of the long-seed KDP crystal, the high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) of an Xcut sample from this crystal was carried out [29] . The transmission spectrum of a THG-oriented sample cut from the long-seed KDP crystal was tested using a Lambda 1050 spectrometer [18] . The LID threshold (LIDT) at 355 nm of the THG-oriented sample was investigated under a Nd:YAG laser [30] .…”

“…The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the HRXRD is 28.8 arc seconds, indicating that the long-seed KDP crystal has good crystalline quality. More details about the testing can be found in other articles [18,24] . As defined by the plane wave dynamic theory of X-ray diffraction, a smaller value of FWHM indicates better crystallinity [32,33] .…”

“…DKDP (KD x H 2‑x PO 4 ) is the best nonlinear crystal used as a tripler in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) facilities, because this crystal can minimize stimulated Raman scattering. , It takes 1–2 years to get a DKDP tripler for ICF facilities using a traditional growth method; therefore, the development of a rapid growth method is important. , In a “point-seed” rapidly grown DKDP crystal, all prismatic and pyramidal crystallographic faces grow. Where these two crystallographic faces are next to each other, a pyramid–prism (PY–PR) boundary appears. , Using orthogonal polarization interferometry, the abrupt Δ( n e – n o ) distribution near the PY–PR boundary was clearly identified . The abrupt Δ( n e – n o ) of the PY–PR boundary has a detrimental effect on the harmonic generation and phase matching. , The threshold of the laser-induced damage (LID) near the PY–PR boundary of a “point-seed” rapidly grown KDP crystal was also found to be less than half of other sectors .…”
