Abstract:Free radicals play a negative role during the thermal degradation of silicone rubber (SR). Quenching free radicals is proposed to be an efficient way to improve the thermal-oxidative stability of SR. In this work, a novel zirconium-containing polyhedral oligometallasilsesquioxane (Zr-POSS) with free-radical quenching capability was synthesized and characterized. The incorporation of Zr-POSS effectively improved the thermal-oxidative stability of SR. The T 5 (temperature at 5% weight loss) of SR/Zr-POSS significantly increased by 31.7 • C when compared to the unmodified SR. Notably, after aging 12 h at 280 • C, SR/Zr-POSS was still retaining about 65%, 60%, 75%, and 100% of the tensile strength, tear strength, elongation at break, and hardness before aging, respectively, while the mechanical properties of the unmodified SR were significantly decreased. The possible mechanism of Zr-POSS for improving the thermal-oxidative stability of SR was intensively studied and it was revealed that the POSS structure could act as a limiting point to suppress the random scission reaction of backbone. Furthermore, Zr could quench the free radicals by its empty orbital and transformation of valence states. Therefore, it effectively suppressed the thermal-oxidative degradation and crosslinking reaction of the side chains.

With developments of the electronics industry, more components are being included in electronic devices, which has led to challenges in thermal management. Using reduced graphene oxide embedded with MQ silicone resin (RGO/MQ) nano-aggregates as the composite filler and silicone rubber (SR) as the matrix, a simple approach is designed to prepare RGO/MQ/SR composites. Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was first used as a substrate for the growth of MQ silicone resin by hybridization, forming sandwich-like micro structured RGO/MQ nano-aggregates successfully. Then, RGO/MQ was integrated into α,ω-dihydroxylpolydimethylsiloxane based on the in situ solvent-free blending method, followed by condensation and vulcanization, fabricating the final RGO/MQ/SR composites. The effective strategy could enhance the adaptability between graphene and silicone matrix under external stimuli at room temperature by embedding nanoscale MQ into the interface of graphene/silicone as the buffer layer. Obvious improvements were found in both thermal conductivity and mechanical properties due to excellent dispersion and interfacial compatibility of RGO/MQ in the host materials. These attractive results suggest that this RGO/MQ/SR composite has potential as a thermal interface material for heat dissipation applications.

Basalt fiber (BF)‐reinforced thermoplastic composites are not only made with little environmental pollution and recyclable, with obvious environmental value, but also have excellent mechanical properties, excellent resistance to high temperature and corrosion. In the present study, modifications to the interface of BF were performed using monoaminosilane and diaminosilane agents, specifically 3‐aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (SATMS) and N‐(2‐aminoethyl)‐3‐aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (DATMS), along with a urea‐modified silane, 3‐urethylpropyltrimethoxysilane (SUTMS). These modifications were evaluated against one another. Utilizing a film lamination technique, composites of BF and thermoplastic polypropylene resin (BF‐PP) were fabricated. Analytical assessments included examining the modified fibers' surface morphology, chemical structure, and roughness. Mechanical assessments of the modified BF‐PP composites were conducted, revealing that composites treated with the urea‐inclusive silane agent (BF/SUTMS‐PP) exhibited superior performance, enhancing flexural strength by 26%, tensile strength by 22.4%, and notched Izod impact strength by 21%. However, because of the lower thermal stability of SUTMS, when the processing temperature exceeds 240°C, there is a decomposition of the heated Y‐base end, thus affecting the mechanical properties of BF/SUTMS‐PP.Highlights The basalt fibers were modified by SATMS, DATMS, and SUTMS. The urea‐containing silane coupling agent has the strongest enhancement effect. Composite reinforced with SUTMS‐BF displayed the best mechanical properties.
