Investigation of Unsteady Flow Effects in an Axial Compressor Based on Whole Annulus Computations

Abstract: Flows in the first stages of axial compressors are subject to a number of unsteady effects which are not generally taken into account in standard investigations, e.g. transition under the influence of impinging wakes as well as that of downstream potential effects, or the influence of unsteady blade row interactions. For numerical studies of these phenomena, usually, simplifications are made to the test case in question. These simplifications include domain scaling, quasi-unsteady modeling, or modeling assumpt… Show more

“…We study the problem of selecting the harmonics for an HB simulation of the first stator and the second stage of DLR's 4.5 stage transonic research compressor Rig 250, cf. [28]. All simulations discussed here were performed on the same mesh which, at 50% channel height, is depicted in Fig.…”

“…To handle the relative motion between stator and rotor passages, the flow equations in each zone are solved in a relative frame of reference. While Rig250 represents an industrial case and has been widely utilized in prior work [39]- [41], it is particularly of interest in the work presented in this paper as it contains a large number of grid zones in relative motion.…”

“…Subject of the investigations is the Rotor 2 blisk stage of an axial high pressure compressor rig with 4.5 stages, see e.g. Refs 9, 15, 16 for a more detailed description of the facility. A general arrangement of the rig with the instrumentation being most important for this study is sketched in Fig.…”
