Investigation on overvoltage caused by vacuum circuit breaker switching off shunt reactor in offshore wind farms

Abstract: The multiple reignitions of vacuum circuit braker (VCB) while switching off the shunt reactor in an offshore wind farm (OWF) would produce a high overvoltage. The post-arc process of ion movement in the vacuum interrupter is analysed. Considering the sheath growth and ion concentration variation, the expression for dielectric recovery strength inside the VCB interrupter is derived. A novel VCB model is implemented in the environment of electromagnetic transient programme based on the new reignition criterion. … Show more

“…Vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) are widely used in switching wind farms because of their advantages of having lower maintenance requirements and longer operation life [11], [12], [13], [15], [17], [18], [24], [25], [26], [27], [28], [29], [32]. The VCB was modeled on ATP as a switch which was controlled using the MODELS component.…”

“…R arc and R op are the arc and post‐arc resistance, respectively. The vacuum circuit breaker model is an integrated model of the continuous transition model and the Helmer model [16]. In this model, the variable resistances and an RLC branch are used to simulate the arc‐burning process and the dielectric recovery process of the vacuum circuit breaker.…”

“…For the pantograph-catenary system, the arc will cause serious ablation on the pantograph slide plate and contact wire, greatly shortening the service life of the system [10,11]. For the switching system, the arc will not only damage the electrodes but also cause a short circuit fault and even cause a fire accident [12,13]. Therefore, the study of arc characteristics is of great significance for improving the quality of electrical material processing and manufacturing and the service life of electric contact systems.…”
