Investigation on radio wave propagation in shallow seawater: Simulations and measurements

Abstract: Abstract-The authors present full wave simulations and experimental results of propagation of electromagnetic waves in shallow seawaters. Transmitter and receiver antennas are tenturns loops placed on the seabed. Some propagation frameworks are presented and simulated. Finally, simulation results are compared with experimental ones.

“…Regarding simulations setup, the most simple case is when the medium is homogeneous, that is, sea water or free-space to start with. This is explained in previous papers [ 12 ] where its inaccuracy was proved. In order to get close to a real environment, a layered medium was also simulated: sea water with seabed.…”

“…Due to this lack of consolidation of underwater communication in the scientific field and the great potential of radiofrequency communication in shallow waters, in 2014, a project entitled UNDERWater radiocommunications for Optimized monitoring using multiReLay Devices (UNDERWORLD) was proposed. Its aim was and is to re-evaluate the possibility of using EM communications in underwater wireless sensor networks, and the first results can be found in [ 12 , 13 ]. Nodes for this network should require low power to extend battery life, should not be too bulky and predicted distance between nodes is around 15–30 m. This network will be useful for monitoring shallow waters from the seabed.…”

“…Calibration curves were obtained experimentally to improve its response. A full study with further measurements, comparison with simulations and analysis of the results were carried out with the same testbed in [12].…”

“…The realworld performance for MI communications underwater, especially in subsea environments, is still an underexplored area. Jimenez et al measured the MI signal attenuation between two loop coils in subsea environments in [7], but do not consider the resonance coupling between two coil antennas. Wang et al measured a MI link in a seawater pool with the deployment distance of 75 cm [14].…”
