Investigation on Sizing of Voltage Source for a Battery Energy Storage System in Microgrid With Renewable Energy Sources

Abstract: The foremost challenge in a microgrid with Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is of managing the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. Therefore, the extent of integration of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has increased recently in a microgrid due to its versatility, high energy density, and efficiency. Generally, BESS is a grid-tied system and has fast power adjustment capability. Controversially, during the stand-alone mode, it cannot operate in the absence of a local Voltage Source (VS)… Show more

“…The basic functions of BESS are charging, discharging, and storage processes, and their characteristics are based on the following conditions [66]: The BESS based power electronic converter is employed for frequency regulation and load changes [67]. To attain a suitable operation, each of these conditions are to be considered, and the behavior of the battery is depending on three factors:…”

“…We are in fact becoming more and more hungry for electric power: on one hand, this is provoked by the constant increase in the world population, and consequently the urban centers are increasing in size with more people living in cities; on the other hand, the hunger for energy, especially in developing countries always in need of new infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and transport, comes from the middle class. Thus, the increased demand of energy should be addressed by both significantly increasing the use of renewable energy sources and improving the efficiency of energy systems [2]. Currently, the most abundant renewable energy sources are wind and solar [3,4]; for both of them, adequate conversion equipment is needed.…”

“…Recently, the demand for electricity of the power system makes the transition into renewable energy sources an inevitable choice due to the rising prices of energy, fossil fuel depletion, and the increasing concerns about the environment [1][2][3]. Owing to the volatility, intermittency, and uncertainty of renewable energy, they bring great challenges to the security and stability of the power network [4][5][6].…”
