Investigation on Spectral Properties of Metal–Insulator–Metal Film Stack with Rectangular Hole Arrays

Abstract: Spectral properties of metal-insulator-metal hole arrays consisting of a dielectric core layer sandwiched between two metallic layers drilled in rectangular hole arrays are investigated using the finite-difference time-domain method in the visible and near-infrared regions. The influences of the thickness and refractive index of the dielectric core layer as well as the thickness of the metallic layer on the spectral absorptance and transmittance are numerically studied. It is found that strong spectral absorpt… Show more

“…Interestingly, the HEHB mode has a propagation length (1/Im( k x )) of tens of microns in the near infrared. [ 25,26,28,29 ] Due to the high RI of Si 3 N 4 ( n 3 = 2.24), in our system the fi eld is especially strong between the fi lms for the LEHB mode, while it is not as strong in the semiinfi nite media for the HEHB mode as it could be for lower n 3 . [ 27 ] On the contrary, the LEHB mode maintains a relatively high damping throughout the whole frequency range.…”

“…In a few cases holes continue into a dielectric supporting fi lm. As a consequence, the optical response of such structures has only been theoretically estimated [28][29][30] and there are no experimental studies on SPP excitation by nanopore arrays in MIM fi lms.In this work we show for the fi rst time fabrication of arrays of very small (down to at least 50 nm) pores penetrating suspended MIM fi lms and connecting two reservoirs (without representing a total void fraction of more than ∼10%). [ 21,23,24 ] Overall, the concept of MIM thin fi lms is interesting due to the appearance of new SPP modes and the possibility to utilize such modes, e.g., in waveguides.…”

“…[ 123 ] Many other numerical studies on the absorption properties of SHA's followed. [124][125][126][127] One such study elaborates on the standard SHA design by integrating rectangular holes of different orientations, i.e. a mixed-SHA (MSHA), and are able to extend the absorptivity above 95% to a bandwidth of 17 nm at approximately 600 nm.…”
