Investigation on spray deposited BaCe0.7Zr0.1Y0.1Gd0.1O2.9 thin film for proton conducting SOFC

Abstract: The BaCe 0.8 Y 0.2 O 2.9 (BCY) is co-doped with Zr and Gd with a motive to improve its chemical stability and electrical conductivity. The films are spray deposited on alumina substrate. The films annealed at different temperatures are studied by XRD, XPS, FTIR, Raman and SEM/AFM. The annealing is observed to promote crystallinity, grain growth and densification. The XRD pattern reveals orthorhombic crystal structure. The presence of Ce(IV) and other elements is confirmed by XPS and EDAX, which also assures ab… Show more

“…Specific conductivities (Table II) for BCY substrates used in this work are similar for conductivities presented in literature to characterize BCY sintered at 1400 • C and 1500 • C, 25,26 although up to one order of magnitude better BCY conductivity values have been presented in few studies. 23 Variation of conductivity in range of one order of magnitude as a function of grain boundary structure of material is a well-known phenomenon and has also been studied in details in the case of BZY.…”

“…For comparison, the Ce 3d and O 1s XPS spectra for another pump measured at 0.5 V are shown in Figure c,d, respectively. The 3d 3/2 peaks at 915.9, 906.1, and 900.2 eV (denoted as u′″, u″ and u) and the 3d 5/2 peaks at 897.6, 888.2, and 881.6 eV (denoted as v′″, v″, and (v) were attributed to Ce 4+ ions, while those peaks at 902.9 and 884.2 eV (denoted as u′ and v′) were assigned to Ce 3+ ions. , The Ce 3+ /Ce total values, as calculated by integrating XPS peak ratios of Ce 3+ responses to all the Ce 3d responses, were 20.5% on the anode and 27.3% on the cathode for HP500 measured at 1.8 V (Figure e). For the measured O 1s XPS spectra in Figure f, the peak at 528.7 eV was assigned to the lattice oxygen (O lattice ) of BZCY while the peak at 531.0 eV was ascribed to the hydroxyl surface species or weakly absorbed H 2 O (O ad ). , The calculated O lattice /(O ad +O lattice ) ratio was 28.9% on the anode and 23.7% on the cathode (Figure f).…”
