Investigation on the effect of opening position across an isolated building for wind-driven cross ventilation

Abstract: This study investigates the effect of opening position on the indoor airflow of a natural ventilated isolated building model. Furthermore, the opening configuration which generate the highest ventilation is to be determined. Seven different opening configurations were considered by varying the opening position on the windward and leeward walls which include three cases of aligned openings and four non-aligned openings. Models with different opening position were simulated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CF… Show more

“…14 shows top-top configuration achieves the highest DFR for all louver angles of NL, 0 • , 15 • , 30 • and 45 • at 0.719, 0.672, 0.593, 0.465 and 0.327 respectively. Such findings of highest volume flow rate obtained by the top-top configuration are in line with results by other authors who have manipulated the opening locations in the presence and absence of louvers (Kosutova et al, 2019;Moey et al, 2021a;Meroney, 2009). The configuration with the second highest DFR at NL configuration is shared between center-center and top-bottom at 0.51.…”

“…Volume mesh refinement regions known as body of influences (BOIs) have been used to locally adopt the mesh in the desired zones as shown in Fig. 4(a) ( van Hooff and Blocken, 2010;Moey et al, 2021a;Sofotasiou et al, 2017;Krishna et al, 2019). The Near BOI has a 150 mm offset distance from the top and the side walls of the building, as shown in Fig.…”

“…Thus, it is necessary to do research on the design of natural ventilation systems under the situation of epidemic prevention and control ( Corticos & Duarte, 2021 ; Park, Choi, Song, & Kim, 2021 ). Natural ventilation is a kind of passive green building technology using thermal pressure caused by the density difference of air inside and outside the building or the wind pressure caused by outdoor atmospheric movement to induce outdoor fresh air ( Gautam, Rong, Zhang, & Abkar, 2019 ; Moey, Chan, Tai, Go, & Chong, 2021 ). As an environment-friendly and energy-saving method, natural ventilation is becoming one favorable option to potentially improve the indoor air quality ( Bayoumi, 2021 ) and lower the risk of disease exposure ( M.Gil-Baeza et al, 2021 ).…”
