Indoor-reared natural enemy with high quality after long-term cold storage is crucial for sustainable pest management. However, besides survivals, the sublethal effects were not widely been reported. In this study, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas), an important biological control agent in Asia, was reared with β-carotene-amended artificial diet (Ha-Car) before storing at 6°C. After 30, 60, 90 and 120 days of storage, a series of biological parameters were measured to evaluate the fitness of H. axyridis. We found that: (1) Survivals significantly decreased with prolonged storage, and more Ha-Car individuals survived at day 120 compared to Ha-CK (control); (2) The contents of glycogen and trehalose dramatically decreased following storage, and the weight losses gradually increased; (3) The average egg production and hatch rates within 15 days were not significantly different among treatments Ha-Car and Ha-CK following long-term storage (90 and 120 days), while the daily hatch rates gradually decreased from relatively high to zero at day 14 and 15; (4) The number of micropyles deposited on eggs also gradually decreased along with oviposition period. After re-mating with a new non-stored partner, the egg viability gradually increased again, while low egg viability was still detected in F1 generation. Moreover, reduced number of micropyles were detected on their eggs. In summary, Ha-Car can be cold stored for about 120 days with relatively high survivals and fecundity, but long-term storage produced remarkable intra- and trans-generational negative effects on fertility. Even though, the cold-stored H. axyridis had great potential being used in biological control program with inevitable promiscuity with field individuals.

Dit project had als doel om de biologische bestrijding van wol-en schild luis in roos en snijcymbidium te verbeteren met nieuwe inzetstrategieën van bestaande bestrijders en door evaluatie van complementaire nieuwe bestrijders. De zoek-efficiëntie van twee soorten sluipwespen van citruswolluis kon worden verbeterd door de sluipwespen voor het uitzetten in de kas te trainen op de geur van wolluis-geïnfesteerde rozenplanten. De roofkever Rhyzobius lophanthae kwam als beste bestrijder van Diaspis boisduvalii schildluis naar voren in een vergelijkende kooiproef met Cymbidium. Kasproeven wezen uit dat deze roofkevertjes weliswaar snel en gemakkelijk nieuwe schildluishaarden konden lokaliseren, maar dat het aantal volwassen R. lophanthae dat in de schildluishaard bleef relatief laag was. Verder werden kleine haarden over het algemeen minder goed opgeruimd dan grotere haarden. Bijvoeren met Ephestia eitjes kon de schildluisbestrijding in kleine schildluishaarden enigszins verbeteren. In labproeven kon de levensduur van volwassen R. lophanthae in de afwezigheid van schildluis met verschillende soorten alternatief voedsel worden verlengd. Hoewel R. lophanthae een belangrijke bijdrage leverde aan de schildluisbestrijding, konden zich ondanks het regelmatige uitzetten toch steeds nieuwe schildluishaarden vormen. Additionele bestrijders zijn nodig om beginnende schildluishaarden aan te pakken en de werking van R. lophanthae te versterken. Oorwormen en roofmijten bleken hiervoor niet geschikt.

Scale insects (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccomorpha) are key pests of agricultural crops and ornamental plants worldwide. Their populations are difficult to control, even with insecticides, due to their cryptic habits. Moreover, there is growing concern over the use of synthetic pesticides for their control, due to deleterious environmental effects and the emergence of resistant populations of target pests. In this context, biological control may be an effective and sustainable approach. Hymenoptera Chalcidoidea includes natural enemies of scale insects that have been successfully used in many biological control programs. However, the correct identification of pest scale species and their natural enemies is particularly challenging because these insects are very small and highly specialized. Integrative taxonomy, coupling DNA barcoding and morphological analysis, has been successfully used to characterize pests and natural enemy species. In this study, we performed a survey of parasitoids and predators of armored and soft scales in Chile, based on 28S and COI barcodes. Fifty-three populations of Diaspididae and 79 populations of Coccidae were sampled over the entire length of the country, from Arica (18°S) to Frutillar (41°S), between January 2015 and February 2016. The phylogenetic relationships obtained by Bayesian inference from multilocus haplotypes revealed 41 putative species of Chalcidoidea, five Coccinellidae and three Neuroptera. Species delimitation was confirmed using ABGD, GMYC and PTP model. In Chalcidoidea, 23 species were identified morphologically, resulting in new COI barcodes for 12 species and new 28S barcodes for 14 species. Two predator species (Rhyzobius lophantae and Coccidophilus transandinus) were identified morphologically, and two parasitoid species, Chartocerus niger and Signiphora bifasciata, were recorded for the first time in Chile.
