Investigations of Isolation Improvement Techniques for Multiple Input Multiple Output (Mimo) Wlan Portable Terminal Applications

Abstract: Abstract-Various isolation improvement techniques for MIMO WLAN card bus applications consisted of three closely spaced loop antennas are presented and investigated both numerically and experimentally in this paper. The proposed techniques are easily implemented and proven effective to achieve high isolation among the antennas which is a must for MIMO terminals to receive uncorrelated signals with good system throughputs.

“…Surface current distribution is one of the key factors in deciding the amount of mutual coupling between the antennas. By altering the ground surface current distribution, a MIMO system with reduced mutual coupling is developed in [5]. Employing EBG structures on the ground plane is another technique to reduce the mutual coupling between MIMO elements [6][7][8].…”

“…The vertical stub can be viewed as a reflector which can reduce the mutual coupling by separating the two antennas' radiation patterns [13,27]. The two rectangular slots cut on the ground plane change the current distribution which further decreases the mutual coupling [23]. Figure 5 shows the simulated surface current distribution of the antenna with and without the decoupling structure.…”

“…Then, this method is further used on a printed microstrip antenna array for mobile applications [17][18][19][20]. High port isolation can also be achieved by etching slits or slots on the ground plane [21][22][23][24][25]. It is noticed that none of these antennas mentioned above are designed for both the 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands and 2.5/3.5/5.5 GHz WiMAX bands.…”

“…By etching slots on the ground plane [5,6], mutual coupling was also suppressed, which can be thought as a bandstop filter between antennas and this effectively reduces current flow between antennas. Similarly, insertion of a ground strip between antennas also shows a good isolation between dual elements [7]. The electromagnetic characteristics of photonic band-gap materials [8] allow reducing the interactions between the antenna and its backward environment.…”
