Investigations of Students’ Motivation Towards Learning Secondary School Physics Through Mastery Learning Approach

Abstract: Teaching method is a major factor that affects students' motivation to learn physics. This study investigated the effects of using mastery learning approach (MLA) on secondary school students' motivation to learn physics. Solomon four non-equivalent control group design under the quasi-experimental research method was used in which a random sample of 4 co-educational secondary schools was obtained in Kieni East Division of Nyeri District in Kenya. The 4 schools were randomly put into 4 groups. Each school prov… Show more

“…Of those, 20 did not propose an explicit definition of the term. When they did, though, most of the time they included the idea of a 'goal', whether of intrinsic or extrinsic origin [42], that oriented behaviour. However, motivation discourse sometimes seems to have a fondness toward its intrinsic part [219], or is inclined to frequently refer to 'self-sustained' states or processes [129], and not as often to externally driven influences.…”

“…In this subcategory of articles, nine research initiatives tested the effects of collaborative (cooperative) interventions on I/M/A, some of them on more specific collaborative models, like 'jigsaw' [22;52], or collaborative 'corrective instruction' [42]. Usually, collaborative learning refers to learners interacting and working together to facilitate acquisition or solving, by sometimes sharing experiences and knowledge, and where individuals depend on and are accountable to one another.…”

“…The low student study result of Physics is caused by many factors such as intern and extern factors from the students [11,12]. The intern factors may be the attitude, motivation, interest, knowledge, skills, hope, assumption, and goals [11][12][13][14][15], while the extern factor is the student study environment condition [11,12], like the utilization of teaching method by the teachers [2], family environment, and the availability of learning facility and infrastructure [13,[15][16][17].…”

“…Physics is also be a matter wich the aims to train thinking ability and analytical skills of students [1]- [2]. Physics is also be an important subject as the basic for mastery of science and technology [3]- [4]. Due to the importance of physics, this subject always learned in secondary schools in Indonesia either junior high school or senior high school as well as the university.…”
