Investigations of the instantaneous performance of a solar chimney power plant installed in Aswan using IoT

Abstract: Although solar chimney power plant (SCPP) has a promising potential to convert the solar energy to electric power, greater efforts are needed to ensure its successful commercialisation on a large scale. The main obstacles with regard to the large-scale applications of SCPP are its efficiency, bulk size and dependency on solar irradiation. A comprehensive study on the integration of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) as a novel technique to monitor and hence improve its performance is presented. A small-scale SCPP is… Show more

“…Because Aswan has long sunny days, the first value of the pyranometer was recorded at 5:15 am to reach the maximum value of about 1000 W/m 2 at noon. Subsequently, this reading dropped to zero at 7:15 pm, as shown in Figure 1, making it one of the rare cities with 14 h of sunlight [13]. Two traditional single-slope solar stills each of area 0.25 m 2 , identical slopes but with different gaps, were fabricated from wood and then placed to face the southern direction with 24 o , according to the latitude angle of Aswan [14].…”

“…5. Concentrated solar plant (CSP) is a type of solar thermal energy utilized to convey electricity by energy concentration by the sun in a single focal point [26], and is considered the foremost powerful and convenient option for its ability to outfit heat and electrical energy [27]. The minimum direct normal irradiance DNI for economically viable CSP plants at current rates is 2000 kWh/m 2 /y.…”
