Invited Review Article: Bibliometrics and Evaluation of Research Performance

Abstract: Bibliometrics has been increasingly applied to research evaluation in recent years. This article reviews studies which supply data to assess the validity and accuracy of citation indicators as a measure of performance. To illustrate the points raised, the article also examines results obtained by case studies on Nordic cancer and cardiovascular research. It concludes that citations measure recognition of a piece of work by the international scientific community, but are also influenced by publication structure… Show more

“…Other factors that influence the impact of journals include the citation conventions between fields, such as the typical number of citations per paper, and the degree to which the journal publishes basic or applied research. Basic research journals act as a source of knowledge and tend to have a high number of citations, whereas applied journals tend to integrate the results from the basic research and disseminate it to practitioners (Luukkonen, 1990). Basic research journals tend to be cited by other journals, whereas more applied journals are likely to cite other journals.…”

“…Bibliometrics, as a measure of scientific performance, has been widely applied to research evaluation for a long period (Saracevi & Perk, 1973;Luukkonen, 1990;Friedberg, 2000). It has been employed to evaluate various researches, for example biology (Sainte-Marie 2010), desalination research (Tanaka & Ho, 2011), solid waste research (Fu et al, 2010), acupuncture research (Han & Ho, 2011), and global climate change .…”
