This study offers a cross-cultural pragmatics perspective on invitations. It explores invitation seQuences in a symmetrical invitation-refusal situation, performed by 20 female native speakers of British English and 20 female native speakers of Japanese, from a discursive approach using role plays. The qualitative analysis of the data obtained from the adapted version of conversation analysis revealed some similarities and differences in turn designs of the English and the Japanese invitations. Although pre-sequences were highly frequent in the English data, they were more so in the Japanese data. The analysis of the linguistic formats of the invitations in the two sets of data revealed that an approach to handle uncertainty seen in the cases where the invitation was initiated with a preface differed – the English speakers used a syntactic solution whereas the Japanese speakers used a sequential solution. These findings highlight the importance of analysing speech acts in situated interactions.

Using conversation analysis as its research method, this article investigates the interactional function of the particle ba in Mandarin Chinese conversation. It is argued that ba is frequently employed by its speakers to adjust deontic gradients in action sequences of directives in mundane conversation besides its function of adjusting epistemic gradients in certain action sequences. The present study claims that the agent and beneficiary of future action can only distinguish one category of directive actions from another, but each category still constitutes several member actions which contrast with one another in terms of social power. The member actions of each category form a continuum, one end of which is the action with the highest level of social power and the other end of which is the action with the lowest level of social power. There exists a normative relation between each member action of a category and the speaker’s deontic status in the real world. The particle ba is a practice of minutely adjusting the speaker’s deontic stance from a higher position to a lower one.

Advice-giving in Mandarin conversation is conducted through various syntactic forms. In this article, we explore several syntactic forms the speakers usually employ when doing advice-giving. An initial examination showed a difference in the distribution of advice-giving made through these practices. They are sequentially-specific syntactic forms of advice-giving and they are sensitive to the sequential environment. Further exploration on this distributional pattern suggested that the advice forms speakers selected display their evaluation of the sequential environment or interactional situation and it is closely related to the speaker's orientation to deontic rights to give advice on a particular sequential position.
