Involvement of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Child Protection System

Abstract: The present study provides information about children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who are involved in the child protection system in a large, Midwestern state. Findings revealed that children with ASD (and children with other disabilities) were more likely to receive services from the child protection system (CPS) than children without disabilities. Children with ASD in CPS were more likely to be elementary school-age (6–10 years) and Caucasian than other children involved in CPS. Children diagnosed wi… Show more

“…Controlling for NLE's, SDQ scores, and demographic variables, the ASD and DD groups were less likely to have caregiver reported PTEs. This finding is in contrast to other studies which have reported higher PTE's in ASD and DD groups compared to typically-developing children (Berg et al 2016;Hall-Lande et al 2015;Spencer et al 2005;Sullivan and Knutson 2000). Prevalence rates of PTE exposure in our study were found to be 24% for the ASD group, 40% for the DD group, and 51% for the comparison mental health disorders group.…”

“…To date, only one study has compared children with ASD and DD to typically-developing peers, all of which were sampled from a database of families involved in the child protection system. This study found that those with ASD and DD were more likely to receive services from child protection than children with no disabilities (Hall-Lande et al 2015).…”

“…Samples of children with ASD receiving mental health treatment have documented elevated rates of maltreatment (Brenner, Pan, Mazefsky, Smith, & Gabriels, ; Mandell, Walrath, Manteuffel, Sgro, & Pinto‐Martin, ). State wide data has shown that children identified with ASD via school records are more likely to be involved in child protective services (Hall‐Lande, Hewitt, Mishra, Piescher, & LaLiberte, ). Similarly, research linking child services administrative data with Medicaid claims have also found that children with ASD are at elevated risk for foster care involvement (Cidav, Xie, & Mandell, ).…”

“…While it is well known that children with developmental disabilities are at higher risk for abuse (Hall-Lande et al 2014), how an experience of trauma may present in youth with ASD is not well described. Brenner and colleagues utilized the AIC data to identify that a history of trauma was associated with more intrusive thoughts, distressing memories, loss of interest, irritability, and lethargy on the CASI-5 and ABC (Brenner et al 2017).…”
