“…In the present work we have shown that several different agents can produce marked acute and transient hyperinsulinaemia in mice infected with B. pertussis. Anoxia, histamine or 2-deoxyglucose, like ether, have been shown or inferred to release catecholamines from the adrenal medulla (Yajima, Kurokawa & Takahashi, 1981;Young et al 1984). The marked hyperinsulinaemia in response to these agents in mice infected with B. pertussis could then be explained by reversal induced by B. pertussis of the inhibitory effects of adrenaline on insulin secre¬ tion as demonstrated previously for pertussis vaccine (Gulbenkian et al 1968) or infection (Furman et al 1981).…”
