Involvement of IL-6 and IL-1 receptor antagonist on intellectual disability

Abstract: Imbalances in the regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines have been increasingly correlated with several neurodevelopmental disorders and their role in neuronal development is being investigated. To assess the possible influence of cytokines on the onset of intellectual disability (ID), we studied the polymorphisms of thirteen proinflammatory cytokine genes in 81 patients and 61 healthy controls. We demonstrated a significant association of interleukin-6 (IL-6) single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (-174 G/C a… Show more

“…Also, elevated levels of IL6 have been found in Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia and Intellectual Disability (Brietzke et al, 2011;Potvin et al, 2008;Sasayama et al, 2013;Aureli et al, 2014). Accordingly, we found strong positive correlations between IL6 À174G frequency and 2004 WHO DALYs for Bipolar Disorder (r 81 = 0.800, P < 0.001) and for Schizophrenia (r 81 = 0.653, P < 0.001).…”

“…Consistent with this evidence, elevated levels of IL6 have been found in Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia and Intellectual Disability (Brietzke et al, 2011;Potvin et al, 2008;Sasayama et al, 2013;Aureli et al, 2014). Additionally, higher IL6 concentrations have been associated with an increased rate of cognitive decline in both executive function and memory function among the elderly (Mooijaart et al, 2013).…”

“…In patients with ID, higher level of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-10 were observed. [2123] Genetic abnormalities of IL-1 receptor among patients with X-linked ID were reported. [2426] Cytokines are responsible for signaling and can affect hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and the function of glia in the developing brain.…”
