Involvement of microRNAs and their potential diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic role in hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: In the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), although surgical resection, interventional therapy, radiotherapy/chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and liver transplantation are effective, the 5-year survival rate is still meager. The main reason is that HCC is more prone to recurrence and metastasis.Furthermore, HCC has an insidious onset and progresses slowly, and patients often miss the optimal time for treatment. 1 MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding single-stranded RNAs first discovered in … Show more

“…ncRNAs play a pivotal role in HCC development and progression, and evidence exists to support their utility as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for this disease [49][50][51]. Among ncRNAs, miRNAs have showed similar expression patterns in extensive studies on human and canine HCC [11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…According to the researchers, mutations in the ARID1A gene can lead to the loss of a protein function that initiates a series of changes in the gene's expression, that support the normal cell growth and cell reproduction. As a result, conditions that contribute to the development of liver cancer may occur [24][25][26].…”

“…Both miR-130b and miR-15a were shown to be overexpressed in HCCs serum when testing for HCC, miR-130b was 87.7% sensitive and 81.4% specific, whereas miR-15b was 98.3% sensitive but only 15.3% specific. Their combination as HCC biomarkers may be good, particularly for early-stage HCC patients with low AFP levels (67). High levels of exosomal miRNA 32-5p expression, which targets PTEN, were observed in HCC patients, with downregulation of miRNA-137 and miRNA-940 (66).…”
