Involvement of Resveratrol against Brain Cancer: A Combination Strategy with a Pharmaceutical Approach

Abstract: A brain tumor (BT) is a condition in which there is growth or uncontrolled development of the brain cells, which usually goes unrecognized or is diagnosed at the later stages. Since the mechanism behind BT is not clear, and the various physiological conditions are difficult to diagnose, the success rate of BT is not very high. This is the central issue faced during drug development and clinical trials with almost all types of neurodegenerative disorders. In the first part of this review, we focus on the concep… Show more

“…Malfunctions in redox parameters and apoptosis are also characteristics of tumour cells, and so it is unsurprising to find drugs with efficacy against cancer being applied to neurodegenerative conditions, or to discover that experimental models developed to study different neurodegenerative conditions are responsive to the same compounds. Examples of such pluripotent compounds include resveratrol, carnosic acid, vitamin D and statins [73] [74] [75] [76]. Although neurodegenerative conditions are characterised by neurocellular changes involving complex molecular mechanisms and different clinical symptoms, a fundamental flaw in the control of cell redox parameters may initiate a pathological process that develops clinically in a manner dependent on the cell types involved to become manifest as different diseases.…”

“…Some flavonoids have synergistic effects with conventional chemotherapy drugs or improve their efficacy. For example, quercetin, icariin, and resveratrol have been reported to improve the sensitivity of glioblastoma cell lines to temozolomide (Karthika et al, 2022; Vengoji et al, 2018).…”

“…In addition, vitamins and minerals serve numerous vital functions, including modulation of brain health and cognitive function. Therefore, administering these micronutrient supplements can help maintain adequate cognitive activity or even prevent dementia (Karthika et al, 2022). However, the evidence in this field of research is still limited (Rutjes et al, 2018).…”
