“…Our estimates of prevalence and upward time trend are more in line with international studies reporting higher prevalence levels in the general population. For example, Wilke et al [20] reported a standardized prevalence of 5.5% for patients with Type 2 diabetes of all ages in Germany in 2008. Additionally, we observed a significant increase in diabetes prevalence between 2006 and 2011.…”

“…This difference, again, is explained in part by different unit prices; a second explanation for this difference, from our perspective, is the difference in applied methodologies, as discussed earlier. Given our reported number of additional healthcare costs of €3,916 per patient year, when a patient is affected by at least one UTI event, and given a German population of 80.62 million, a T2DM prevalence rate of 5.75% [23], and an estimated UTI incidence of 87 cases per 1,000 T2DM patient-years (which is based on analysis of our dataset), the UTI associated healthcare burden for the German healthcare system is more than €1.5 billion per year.…”

“…Inclusion in the T2DM-prevalent sample was confirmed via the international classification of diseases (ICD) coding if physicians documented at least one outpatient/inpatient T2DM diagnosis (i.e. ICD-10 E11.-) in 2010 [23,24,25]. …”
