Ion-Exchange Equilibria of Pb2+, Ni2+, and Cr3+ Ions for H+ on Amberlite IR-120 Resin

Abstract: A study of the binary cation-exchange equilibria between H+-form Amberlite IR-120 resin and aqueous solutions of lead, nickel, and chromium nitrates at pH < 3 has been made. Experiments were carried out at (283, 303, and 323) K with solutions having total cation concentrations of 0.1 eq·L−1. The experimental equilibrium data have been satisfactorily correlated using the homogeneous mass action law model (LAM). This model assumes nonideal behavior for both the solution and the solid phase. Wilson and Pitzer equ… Show more

“…Due to forbidding cost of these processes, the use of resins have been received with considerable attention. In recent years, a number of commercial resin such as Lewatit TP-207 [10], Amberlite IR-120 [11], Amberlite IRC-748 [12], Lewatite S-100 [13], Lewatit CNP-80 [14], Amberlite IRC-718 [15] have been used to remove heavy metals from wastewater. Ion-exchange is highly effective, low-cost material, efficient, and easy to operate among the physicochemical treatment processes.…”

“…Similar approaches using Wilson's equation have been also used by other authors including (Valverde et al 2001;Carmona et al 2008;Pabalan 1994;Smith and Woodburn 1978). A different possibility to overcome the problem of the activity coefficients in the solid phase was used by Ruvarac andPetkovic (1988, 1993) based on the existence of an inflexion point in the dependence (written here for our system) log a Cu a 2 Na ¼ f ð a Cu Þ.…”

“…The maximum level of exchange reaches 100 % only for univalent cations, so that the equivalent ionic fractions should be normalized by dividing them through the maximum exchange attainable for the multivalent ion. (Valverde et al 2001;Carmona et al 2008;Barrer and Klinowski 1972;Sherry 1968;Barrer et al 1973;Vansant and Uytterhoeven 1971) Singare et al (2008aSingare et al ( , 2008bLokhande et al 2007;Lokhande et al 2009) have investigated the ion exchange of univalent ions, both anions and cations, on resins, at very low concentrations and they have obtained values of the equilibrium constant at different total concentrations, in remarkable agreement, even without using corrections for the non-ideal behavior of the external solution and of the zeolite phase.…”

“…3, a linear relationship with a correlation factor R 2 = 0.988 is obtained between the dielectric constant and the equilibrium constant at different glycerol-water mixtures (excluding pure water). 32,33 These results indicate that the glycerol effectively solvates the ions favouring its interaction with the active sites of the resin and thus the resin selectivity for sodium increases with glycerine content. The increase in glycerine content produces an increase of the selectivity of the resin for sodium.…”
