Ion Mobility Spectrometer for Rapid Simultaneous Detection of Positive and Negative Ions

Abstract: Abstract-Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) is a common technology used for rapid detection of trace amounts of explosives (mostly forming negative ions) and drugs (forming positive ions). Emergency chemically hazardous substances widely used in modern industry. Some emergency chemically hazardous substances form positive ions, others form negative ions. Therefore, for the detection of different substances in real time is required to apply the structure of two IMS-detectors. The article describes a device for the… Show more

“…Based on the IMS method, many portable devices, such as CAM and its modified versions, and transportable devices, such as GID-2, GID-3, and ALERT, for contamination detection, have been designed and commissioned. The working principle is shown in Figure 3 [ 19 , 20 ].…”

“…Another method employs a double drift tube with a common reaction region to detect positive and negative ions, respectively. The double drift tube method does not split the sample, but still requires two drift tubes and two sets of control electronics. , Recently introduced fast polarity switching IMS switches the drift voltage polarity on a single drift tube and collects positive and negative ion signals alternately. ,, Among them, fast polarity switching IMS are favored by the researchers for its simple structure, low power consumption, cost and potential for miniaturization …”
