“…Other proposed approaches involve diffusion barrier layers, such as TiN layer [20], Al-O-N thin-film layer [21,22], Cr-O-N thin-film layer [22], Re (W)-Cr-Ni layer [23,24] and Ni-W diffusion barrier [15]. Among various diffusion barrier candidates, ␣-Al 2 O 3 is a very effective diffusion barrier material to suppress the inter-diffusion between MCrAlY and superalloy [25,26].…”

“…The main disadvantage of NiCrAlY coatings is that the inward diffusion of Ni from NiCrAlY overlay coating to g-TiAl substrate lead to the formation of brittle interlayers and coating premature failure [4]. This problem might be addressed by the introduction of a diffusion barrier between the coating and substrate to eliminate or greatly reduce the interdiffusion of alloying elements [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. In the present work, an intermediate film of arc ion plated Cr 2 O 3 was employed as a diffusion barrier between g-TiAl and NiCrAlY overlay coating and its effectiveness was investigated.…”

“…It is described that the interdiffusion accelerates the protective surface scales spalling and makes the continuous scales not regenerated because of the depletion of Cr and Al elements. Developing a diffusion barrier as an interlayer can effectively inhibit the elemental interdiffusion, thus markedly prolong the service life of the MCrAlY coatings [7].…”
