Ion-Solvent Interactions in Acrylonitrile Solutions of Some Tetraalkylammonium Halides Using FTIR Spectroscopy

Abstract: The FTIR spectra of tetrapentylammonium bromide (Pe 4 NBr), tetrapentylammonium iodide (Pe 4 NI), tetrahexylammonium bromide (He 4 NBr), tetrahexylammonium iodide (He 4 NI), tetraheptylammonium bromide (Hp 4 NBr), and tetraheptylammonium iodide (Hp 4 NI) in pure acrylonitrile were observed at 0.1(M), 0.08(M), 0.05(M), and 0.02(M) concentrations. The region of immobilized solvent resulting from the structure-making effects of electrostriction increases with increase in charge-surface ratio of the ions. Cation-a… Show more

“…A band in the region 1348.2 cm À1 is obtained for symmetric stretching vibration The result obtained can be interpreted by the various types of interaction between the solvent molecules given in scheme 1. As soon as CH 3 NO 2 is added in PhNO 2 the dipole-dipole Table 5 Walden product (K o Á g) and Gibb's free energy change (DG°) of NaPh 4 increase in the H-bonding interaction between the PhNO 2 and CH 3 NO 2 molecules and also between CH 3 NO 2 molecules. The C-H stretching of the phenyl group of PhNO 2 almost remains the same in all the mass fraction of CH 3 NO 2 in PhNO 2 .…”

“…Conductance study is a very important tool in obtaining the information regarding the solvation and association behaviour of ions in solution. FT-IR spectroscopy has also been one of the most convenient methods for investigating the ion-solvent interactions in electrolytic solutions [2][3][4].…”

“…The conductance data were reported at a frequency of 1 kHz and the accuracy of Infrared spectra were recorded in 8300 FTIR spectrometer (Shimadzu, Japan). The details of the instrument have already been previously described [13]. The concentration of the studied solutions used in the IR study is 0.05 M.…”

“…Thus owning to the effect of ternary association [22] the non-conducting species, Bu4PCH3SO3, removes some from the solution, and have been represented in Table 5. The KP value is utilized to calculate the inter ionic distance (aIP) parameter with the aid of the Bjerrum's theory of ionic association [15,16] in the form (13)…”
