Although dicyanamide (i.e., [N(CN) ] ) has been commonly used to obtain low-viscosity, halogen-free, room-temperature ionic liquids, liquid-crystalline salts containing such anions have remained virtually unexplored. Here we report a series of amphiphilic dicyanamide salts that, depending on their structures and compositions, adopt smectic, columnar, or bicontinuous cubic thermotropic liquid-crystalline mesophases, even at room temperature in some cases. Their thermal properties were explored by polarized light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (including evolved gas analysis), and variable-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Comparison of the thermal phase characteristics of these new liquid-crystalline salts featuring "V-shaped" [N(CN) ] anions with those of structural analogues containing [SCN] , [BF ] , [PF ] , or [CF SO ] anions indicated that not only the size of the counterion but also its shape should be considered in the development of mesomorphic salts. Collectively, these discoveries may be expected to facilitate the design of thermotropic ionic liquid crystals that form inverted-type bicontinuous cubic and other sophisticated liquid-crystalline phases.

A series of highly‐fluorinated triaminocyclopropenium salts, with up to six fluorous groups, were prepared and their properties as ionic liquids investigated. Reaction of pentachlorocyclopropane or tetrachlorocyclopropene with bis(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl)amine, HN(CH2CF3)2, occurs in the presence of a trialkylamine, NR3, to give cations with two fluorinated amino groups, [C3(N(CH2CF3)2)2(NR2)]+ (R=Et, Pr, Bu, Hex), with traces of [C3(N(CH2CF3)2)3]+. Use of appropriate reagent ratios and reaction times and subsequent addition of a dialkylamine, HNR'R”, gives cations with one fluorinated amino group, [C3(N(CH2CF3)2)(NR2)(NR'R”)]+ ((NR2)(NR'R”)=(NBu2)2, (NEt2)(NPr2), (NBu2)(NBuMe)). These cations were isolated as chloride salts and some of these were converted to bistriflamide, dicyanamide and triflate salts to provide ionic liquids. These salts were characterised by thermal (DSC and TGA) measurements and miscibility/solubility properties (determined in a range of solvents). Ionic liquids (ILs) were also characterised by density, viscosity and conductivity measurements where possible. X‐ray diffraction studies of chloride salts showed the formation of fluorous regions and more hydrophilic ionic regions in the solid state.

A set of mixed‐substituted potassium alkylcyano‐ and alkylcyanofluoroborates has been synthesized using easily accessible starting compounds and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR and vibrational spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. In addition, single‐crystal structures of salts of the cyanoborate anions have been derived from X‐ray diffraction experiments. The 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium room temperature ionic liquids ([EMIm]+‐RTILs) with the new borate anions have been synthesized and their physicochemical properties, that is, high thermal and electrochemical stability, low viscosity, and high conductivity, have been compared to the properties of related [EMIm]+‐RTILs. The influence of the different alkyl substituents at boron has been assessed. The exemplary study on the properties with the [EMIm]+‐ILs with the mixed water stable alkylcyanoborate anions points towards the potential of these fluorine‐free borate anions, in general.
