Ionic Conductors

Abstract

The fundamental structural and physical properties of ionic conductors in the solid state are briefly discussed. Recent developments in ionically conducting solids are reviewed. Materials discussed include: crystalline cation conductors with Na + , Li + , and H + ion motion; crystalline anion conductors, primarily with the fluorite‐type structure and with oxide‐ and fluoride ion mobilities; mixed ionic/electronic conductors; amorphous glass electrolytes and polymer solid electrolytes. Applications of some of these solid‐state ionic conductors in electrochemical devices such as sodium and lithium rechargeable batteries, sensors, fuel cells and electrochromic smart windows are presented.
