Ionic Crystals of {[Ni(phen)3]2Ge4S10xSol, Showing Solid-State Solvatochromism and Rapid Solvent-Induced Recrystallization

Abstract: Thiogermanates, {[Ni(phen)(3)](2)Ge(4)S(10)}·xSol (Sol = 4MeOH·12H(2)O (1) and 24H(2)O (2)) were prepared and characterized by single-crystal structure analysis. There are large quantities of the solvent molecules that cocrystallize with the anions and cations and form a strong hydrogen bonding network (O-H···S and O···H-O-H···O). Reversible yellow-pink color change with fast speed was found for these compounds, when the crystals were immersed in alcohol solvents and water alternately. The time of the solvent-… Show more

“…Ionic crystals, which are important families of crystalline materials, have been attracting considerable interest because of their unique chemical and physical properties, which depend on their crystalline structures and constituent ions [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Normally, cations and anions are densely packed in the crystal lattice, with the coordination numbers determined by the relative sizes and charges of the constituent ions since the Coulombic forces are strong and directionless.…”

“…All these values agree well with those reported previously. [27][28][29][30] When assembled into infinite structures, both InS 4 and GeS 4 tetrahedra share their neighboring tetrahedra via the vertex S atoms. Each GeS 4 tetrahedron is connected to four InS 4 tetrahedra while each InS 4 is connected to two GeS 4 and three other InS 4 tetrahedra (Fig.…”

“…When the crystals were immersed in alcohol solvent and then in water alternately, the color immediately changes between pink and yellow ( Fig. 6a) [55]. The speed of the solvent-induced color change relates to the molecular size and the structure of alcohols (Fig.…”
