Ionic liquids as an enabling tool to integrate reaction and separation processes

Abstract: This tutorial review highlights representative examples of ionic liquid (IL)-based (bio)catalytic systems integrating reaction and separation, as a tool for the development of sustainable chemical processes (e.g. IL/scCO2 biphasic reactors, membrane reactors, nanodrop systems, microfluidic devices, supported IL phases, sponge-like ILs, etc.).

“…247 In addition, Villa et al discuss non-conventional media in biocatalysis and ISPR with microflow systems. 248 The topic of 'biocatalysis in non-conventional media' (BNCM) was recently augmented by the field of using deep eutectic solvents (DES) as efficient solvents and reaction (co) media in biocatalysis. 240,[249][250][251][252][253][254] DESs gained much attention in the last years being neoteric solvents which special benefits, such as an easy and fast preparation procedure and several tunable properties.…”

“…They are usually formed by highly polar combinations of organic, voluminous, and asymmetric cations, decorated with aliphatic residues, and inorganic anions of symmetrical, regular shape, this chemical composition resulting in a low melting point. Poor packaging and poor coordination of ions in the structure of ionic liquids is the reason why they remain liquid at room temperature [98][99][100].…”

“…Currently, there has a common trend to obtain heterogenized systems that combine advantages of homogeneous catalysis (high activity) and heterogeneous catalysis (easiness of isolation, possibility of employing fixed bed reactors), which makes the catalytic process more cost-effective. are frequently employed as precursors of cations, whereas carboxylates of fatty acids, levulinates, and lactates are precursors of anions [24][25][26][27][28][29][30]. Moreover, studies are conducted on the properties of solvents and their effect on the environment and health safety, which enables their conscious and safe use [31].…”
