Ionised gas kinematics in MaNGA AGN

Abstract: Context. Feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in general seems to play an important role in the evolution of galaxies, although the impact of AGN winds on their host galaxies is still unknown in the absence of a detailed analysis. Aims. We aim to analyse the kinematics of a sample of 170 AGN host galaxies as compared to those of a matched control sample of non-active galaxies from the MaNGA survey in order to characterise and estimate the extents of the narrow-line region (NLR) and of the kinematically … Show more

“…Significant effort is being devoted to understanding the physics of AGN-driven outflows and measuring their energetic impact (e.g., Fischer et al 2018;Baron & Netzer 2019a, 2019bFörster Schreiber et al 2019;Mingozzi et al 2019;Davies et al 2020b;Wylezalek et al 2020;Avery et al 2021;Fluetsch et al 2021;Lamperti et al 2021;Luo et al 2021;Negus et al 2021;Ruschel-Dutra et al 2021;Speranza et al 2021;Vayner et al 2021;Bianchin et al 2022;Deconto-Machado et al 2022;Kakkad et al 2022). However, outflows are inhomogeneous, with a large range of densities and geometries, such that the derived gas masses and outflow rates depend strongly on how the gas densities are estimated.…”

“…As illustrated in many works (e.g. Sun et al 2020 ;Deconto-Machado et al 2022 ), in the central kpc in radius, AGN-host galaxies can have velocity dispersions o v er 100 km s −1 higher than those of other galaxies with similar morphologies.…”

“…Rembold et al ( 2017) selected an AGN sample from the MaNGA MPL-5 using the diagnostic diagrams described abo v e, which was updated with data from the MPL-8 (the same used here) in Riffel et al ( 2021 ) andDeconto-Machado et al ( 2022 ). This selection is based on the nuclear spectra of the SDSS-III using emission-line fluxes from Thomas et al ( 2013 ).…”
