The ubiquitous existence of COVID-19 has required the management of congested areas such as workplaces. As a result, the use of a variety of inspiring tools to deal with the spread of COVID-19 has been required, including internet of things, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and geofencing technologies. In this work, an efficient approach based on the use of ML and geofencing technology is proposed to monitor and control the density of persons in workplaces during working hours. In particular, the workplace environment is divided into a number of geofences in which each person is associated with a set of geofences that make up their own cluster using a dynamic user-centric clustering scheme. Different metrics are used to generate a unique geofence digital signature (GDS) such as Wi-Fi basic service set identifier, Wi-Fi received signal strength indication, and magnetic field data, which can be collected using the person’s smartphone. Then, these metrics are utilized by different ML techniques to generate the GDS for each indoor geofence and each building geofence as well as to detect whether the person is in their cluster. In addition, a Layered-Architecture Geofence Division method is considered to reduce the processing overhead at the person’s smartphone. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can perform well in a real workplace environment. The results show that the system accuracy is about 98.25% in indoor geofences and 76% in building geofences.

Smartphone and satellite network coverage contributes to a number of useful applications that increase the comfort of everyday people's lives. Using the Global Positioning System (GPS) provided by the satellite, people can be tracked in real time at a specific location. When it comes to infectious diseases such as COVID-19, the most important measure to reduce its spread is to contain it. Quarantine is usually a solution and any tracking system can be employed to specify the location of the infected people. However, as quarantined areas are scattered around the world, it is difficult to accurately trace the boundaries within accommodation. A geo-fenced GPS system, which has adopted an efficient border protection system, is proposed for quarantine and monitoring purposes of COVID-19 carriers. The system is introduced as an application to implement a home/local quarantine policy using bracelets that fit the boundaries of smartphones. From the experimental results obtained, it is observed that the proposed system achieves an effective and high accuracy performance in various location conditions.

COVID-19, which has become a global pandemic since March 2020, has tremendously affected human life globally. The negative impact of COVID-19 affects societies in almost all aspects. Implementing quarantine monitoring, also social distancing, and contact tracing are a series of processes that can suppress the new infected COVID-19 cases in various countries. Prior works have proposed different monitoring systems to assist the monitoring of individuals in quarantines, as well as many methods are offered for social distancing and contact tracing. These methods focus on one function to provide a reliable system. In this paper, we propose IoT-based quarantine monitoring by implementing a geofence equipped with social distancing features to offer an integrated system that provides more benefits than one system carrying one particular function. We propose a system consisting of a low cost, low complexity, and reusable wristband design and mobile apps to support the quarantine monitoring system. For the geofencing, we propose a GPS-based geofence system that was developed by taking advantage of the convenience offered by the Traccar application. Meanwhile, we add the notification for social distancing feature with adaptive distance measurement RSSI-based set up in the android application. Based on the experiment we did to validate the system, in terms of wristband-to-smartphone communication, scanning interval in smartphone and advertising interval in wristband is best to set in 7 s for both. For social distancing notification and geofence, we measure the system performance through precision, recall, accuracy, and F-measure.
