iPad2 ® Use in Patients With Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators Causes Electromagnetic Interference: The EMIT Study

Abstract: BackgroundOver 140 million iPads® have been sold worldwide. The iPad2®, with magnets embedded in its frame and Smart Cover and 3G cellular data capability, can potentially cause electromagnetic interference in implantable cardioverter defibrillators. This can lead to potentially life‐threatening situations in patients. The goal of this study was to determine whether the iPad2® can cause electromagnetic interference in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators. Methods and ResultsTwenty‐seven patient… Show more

“…Also, not every ICD can be inactivated by magnet, which is, especially during emergency situations, not even visible to the anesthesiologist or surgeon . Thus a “Smart Magnet” with visual feedback is a good option to increase the patient's safety . In some devices, permanent inactivation occurs after magnet application.…”

“…Activation of magnet response mode is a function of the device's settings, the magnet's distance from the device, strength of the magnetic field, and duration of the interaction between the magnet and CIED . Household devices, like the iPad2 (Apple Inc., Cupertino, CA, USA), have been shown to contain magnets that are strong enough to activate magnet response mode when placed over CIEDs . In the present study, a magnet response event was only initiated when the CPAP mask was placed directly over the device pulse generator but not when the mask was positioned 7 inches away at a representative face level.…”

“…The commonly used iPad 2 wireless tablet device has been demonstrated to trigger magnetic modes in CIEDs when placed directly over the left pectoral region. 34 Moreover, the tendency to use a supine or nearly supine dental patient's chest area for resting of instruments or monitors should be discouraged.…”
