Iron(III) complex of a tridentate NNN type ligand: synthesis, X-ray structure, thermal analysis and voltammetric studies

Abstract: A mononuclear iron(III) complex with 2,6-bis(3,4,5-trimethyl-N-pyrazolyl)pyridine (btmpp) has been synthesized, and characterized by X-ray crystallography, IR, UV-Vis and TGA-DTA methods. The Fe(III/II) couple was characterized by way of cyclic voltammetry using DMF solvent, where the complex was observed to have an irreversible behaviour.

“…The weaker ligand field exerted on 15 a metal ion by bpp makes its complexes more labile in solution than corresponding complexes of terpy derivatives. 6 For this reason, terpy derivatives are still more widely used in metal/organic materials chemistry and self-assembly, because their complexes are more robust.…”

“…methyl), the subsequent chromatographic purification of the desired 3',3''-disubstituted isomer can be challenging. A number of 1-bpp derivatives bearing simple alkyl or aryl 20 substituents have been prepared in this way, 6,7,[14][15][16][17] including chiral derivatives produced using optically pure pyrazole reagents. 6 An exception to this generalisation is where indazole reagents are used, when eq 1 yields the more hindered 2,6-di(indazol-1-yl)pyridine products (1-bip, Scheme 1) in moderate 25 yield.…”

“…Papers dealing with the structures of mononuclear Co(II) complexes [5], the structures and electrochemical properties of Ni(II) dinuclear complexes [6], the structure and electrochemical properties of a Cu(II) nitrato complex [7], Ru(II) complex structures [8], and dye-sensitized solar cell efficiency using similar ligands have been published. Following our systematic study on the coordination chemistry of btmpp with transition metals [9,10], here we report the synthesis and structural characterization of new metal-coordination compounds with the pyrazole derivative ligand btmpp. A single crystal X-ray study was carried out for complex 1 which gave the most suitable crystals.…”
