Iron Metallurgy via Concentrated Solar Energy

Abstract: Environmental protection is deeply rooted in current societies. In this context, searching for new environmentally friendly energy sources is one of the objectives of industrial policies in general, and of the metallurgical industries in particular. One of these energy sources is solar energy, which offers a great potential in high temperature applications, such as those required in metallurgy processes, when properly concentrated. In this paper, we propose the utilization of concentrated solar energy in ironm… Show more

“…For example, the CO 2 mitigation dosage is 11.75 kg/ton sinters when 15% solid fuel is replaced with NG. 16) Therefore, carbon emissions from the sintering process could be significantly reduced if clean energy sources could be used instead of solid fuels, such as hydrogen-rich gaseous fuels, microwave energy, electricity, solar thermal energy 17,18) and biomass energy. 19,20) Our team has showed an innovated sintering process without carbon in raw materials.…”

“…Solar energy has taken growing interest in the last decades with the development of renewable energy sources, and particularly when properly concentrated, this energy source can be used in high temperature applications, as those that can be read in Fernández-González et al, 2018 [1], and, for instance, in our case, we used solar energy in the synthesis of calcium aluminate cement [2] and in the iron metallurgy [3].…”

“…These researchers can be read in the extended review published in 2018 in the journal Solar Energy with the title Concentrated solar energy applications in materials science by Fernández-González and collaborators [48]. Focusing on our research group, the investigation has focused on the: synthesis of calcium aluminates [49], iron metallurgy [50,51], the treatment of Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag [52], the production of silicomanganese [53], and transformations in the Ca-Si-O system [54]. The objective of the present Case Study is to present an application of concentrated solar energy in the copper metallurgy: potential recovery of copper and iron from copper slag using solar energy as heat supply for the process.…”
