The radish culture is highly sensitive to salinity. The use of an amino acid-based biostimulant can, therefore, be an attenuator of the deleterious effect of salinity on the radish crop. The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of a biostimulant based on amino acids and freshwater algae extract on radish (Raphanus sativus L.) cultivated under irrigation conditions with saline water. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse. The saline levels evaluated were 0.15, 1.8, and 2.8 dS.m-1 and four doses of biostimulant were applied (0, 2, 4, and 6 mL/L). The statistical design was completely randomized, in a 4x3 factorial scheme with 4 replications. Biometric and biomass analyses, sodium and potassium contents, and soluble solids were performed. Was observed that plants submitted to high salinity levels (2.8 dS m-1) with application of 6mL/L of the biostimulant showed high values in height (12.2 cm), stem (5mm) and tuber (6mm) diameter, leaf area (50cm2), fresh and dry mass of aerial part (3.5 g) and underground system (5.8 g). The application of the biostimulant 6 mL/L, at the salinity level of 2.8 dS.m-1, favored the increase of saline ions in the tuber of the plants. The application the biostimulant provided a higher content of soluble solids. Applications of the biostimulant in plants with saline stress showed beneficial responses in the performance of the radish, therefore the dose of 6 mL/L is recommended for a satisfactory response of the performance of the radish in saline conditions.

N EGYPT, water scarcity is the main problem the agricultural sector faces. Salicylic acid (SA) as a plant growth regulator may help mitigate the adverse effects of deficit irrigation water on pepper plants. Sweet pepper (cv. S702 F1) plants subjected to deficit irrigation (DI 40% = 60% of crop evapotranspiration, ETc) regularly during growth stages produced decreases in plant height, total chlorophyll, fruit number per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit volume, fruit yield, fruit carotenoids, and total dry matter comparing with the full irrigation (FI= 100% of ETc). However, water use efficiency (WUE), proline, free amino acids, ascorbic acid, total sugars, total soluble solids (TSS), total phenols content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC), and nitrate content were enhanced under deficit irrigation conditions. The results showed that under FI or DI 40% with foliar application of SA at 1.0 mM was more effective than 0.5 and 1.5 mM in improving vegetative growth and yield parameters. However, FI produced the highest significant values of plant height, total chlorophyll, fruit yield, carotenoids, and total dry matter. Conversely, the pepper plant's ability to withstand DI 40% was enhanced by the 1.0 mM SA treatment, which resulted in the highest accumulation of ascorbic acid, total sugars, TSS, TPC, and TFC. Moreover, the application of SA significantly increased WUE and decreased fruit nitrate content. It could be concluded that the foliar application of SA can alleviate the detrimental effects of deficit irrigation on pepper plants.

Lettuce is a leafy vegetable sensitive to salinity, and under saline stress conditions it presents nutritional imbalance, mainly in calcium absorption. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the effect of enriching the nutrient solution with calcium nitrate in solutions prepared with saline water in the lettuce crop. A completely randomized design was used, with five treatments and four replicates. The treatments were represented by five nutrient solutions [S1 - standard nutrient solution (SNP); S2 - SNP + NaCl (3.5 dS m-1); S3 - S2 + Ca (NO3)2 (50% = 6.86 mmol L-1); S4 - S2 + Ca(NO3)2 (100% = 9.15 mmol L-1); S5 - S2 + Ca(NO3)2 (150% = 11.43 mmol L-1)] in lettuce from the curly group, cv. Elba. After preparing the nutrient solutions, the solutions had the following electrical conductivities: 1.8 (S1); 4.8 (S2); 5.4 (S3); 6.0 (S4); 6.6 (S5) dS m-1. Variables of growth, nutrition and postharvest quality of lettuce were evaluated. With the exception of stem diameter, number of total leaves, plant pH and vitamin C content, the other variables were affected by the extra addition of Ca(NO3)2 in the nutrient solutions. The lettuce cv Elba grown in coconut fiber is tolerant to the salinity of 4.8 dS m-1 (S2). In conditions where the use of saline water with 3.5 dS m-1 for the preparation of the nutrient solution is unavoidable, the use of extra doses of Ca(NO3)2 in the lettuce crop is not recommended.
