Irritation and local tissue tolerance studies assess the short‐term hazard of pharmaceutical agents in the immediate region of their application or installation. Local tolerance effects are generally limited to irritation but may also include hematocompatability and pyrogenicity. This article discusses various factors affecting irritation responses and test outcome, including phototoxicity and parenteral irritation.
