Is Coffee a Useful Source of Caffeine Preexercise?

Abstract: Caffeine is a well-established ergogenic aid, with its performance-enhancing effects demonstrated across a wide variety of exercise modalities. Athletes tend to frequently consume caffeine as a performance enhancement method in training and competition. There are a number of methods available as a means of consuming caffeine around exercise, including caffeine anhydrous, sports drinks, caffeine carbohydrate gels, and gum. One popular method of caffeine ingestion in nonathletes is coffee, with some evidence sug… Show more

“…From a methodological standpoint, our study allows us to identify themes that refresh the ideas of some highly cited review articles presenting studies relating coffee/caffeine to sport [ 6 , 23 , 67 , 68 ]. Our study also provides greater coverage of the articles analyzed (larger article dataset size) than other recent review studies [ 17 , 25 , 26 ], also analyzing the relationships between the selected articles [ 35 ]. However, we recognize that this type of limited review study [ 17 , 25 , 26 ] tends to favor the specificity of the articles selected for analysis.…”

“…In a double-blind, Latin-square randomized, crossover, placebocontrolled design, in which participants and treatments were the blocking factors, 46 recreationally active participants (27 men: [mean ± SD] age = 29 ± 6 years, height = 180 ± 6 cm, body mass = 78 ± 12 kg;VO 2 max = 55 AE 11 ml • kg −1 • min −1 and 19 women: age = 28 ± 6 years, height = 166 ± 7 cm, body mass = 72 ± 11 kg;VO 2 max = 41 AE 9 ml • kg −1 • min −1 ) completed a 5-km cycling time trial on a cycle ergometer 60 min following the ingestion of 0.09 g/kg coffee providing 3 mg/kg of caffeine, or a placebo (PLA). A caffeine dose of 3 mg/kg was ingested as this dose has been demonstrated to offer ergogenic effects (Pickering & Grgic, 2019b). Participants were recreational cyclists and had consistently trained on average 2 ± 1 times per week for at least 1 year.…”
