Is Decidua Affected in Gestational Hypertension?: Indication by Elevated Pp14 Levels

Abstract: The serum concentration of placental protein 14 (PP14) was measured by radioimmunoassay in 129 apparently healthy pregnant women at 33-40 weeks, and the results were compared with those of 40 women with gestational hypertension either with or without proteinuria at similar weeks. In normal pregnancy, maternal serum PP14 levels decreased towards term. Therefore, the results were expressed as multiples of the normal median for each week. In gestational hypertension, the values were higher than normal (p less tha… Show more

“…Interestingly, some women with preeclampsia show an increased glycodelin concentration during advancing pregnancy, compared with the normal pattern of decreasing values (31). In a study on gestational hypertension, the serum glycodelin levels were significantly higher than in normal pregnancy, being above the normal median in 80% of cases and above the normal 90th percentile in 38% of cases (191), but again, not all studies have confirmed this (192).…”

“…Biochemical tests of fetoplacental well-being have been applied in this condition (6), sometimes with dramatic clinical significance (20,29). Increased concentrations of PP12 and PP14 have been described previously in pre-eclampsia (12,13,32) but no details were given regarding the severity of the disease-merely the presence or absence of proteinuria. In order to investigate further how preeclampsia affects the decidua, in addition to its known effect on the placenta, we have examined PP12 and PP14 levels in different grades of pre-eclampsia.…”

“…In gestational hypertension, the values were higher than normal. The presence or absence of proteinuria did not affect these results [10]. In contrast, Howell et al [8] demonstrated a slight reduction in the median values of PP14 in pregnancies complicated by hypertension.…”

“…Iino et al [10] investigated serum concentration of placental protein 14 (PP14), which is the former name for glycodelin, in 129 healthy pregnant women and 40 women with gestational hypertension either with or without proteinuria at similar weeks. In normal pregnancy, maternal serum PP14 levels decreased towards term.…”
