Is Environmental Awareness a Good Predictor of an Individual’s Altruism Level?

Abstract: This study investigated the validity of using a Likert-type environmental awareness index to predict an individual’s altruism level by comparing models identifying how respondents’ demographical characteristics (age, income, education, gender, etc.), degree of political and social awareness, and attitudes toward donation influence the environmental awareness index and the self-report altruism scale (SRAS). “…As past donations to charities increase WTP for ecosystem services in our study, past donations to a charity might also indicate a willingness to engage in environmental and conservation projects too. As pointed out by De Oliveira et al (2011), our results support list-sharing from charities towards organisations who need not share their mission per se, which is supported by Aruga (2020) who finds an association between altruism and environmental awareness. Related to this, Nelson et al ( 2019) find that tourists are more willing to donate to bundled conservation issues rather than isolated issues when they explore real voluntary payments for conservation on a popular island (Nelson et al 2019).…”

“…Additionally, consumers informed about environmental sustainability issues are less likely to buy products that harm the environment (Aruga, 2020;Ahmed et al, 2021). High levels of sustainability awareness among consumers correlate with a stronger intention to purchase sustainable or green products, fostering pro-environmental intentions and behaviors (Li et al, 2020;Jaiswal & Kant, 2018;Jauhari, 2017).…”

“…Changing society's behaviour patterns regarding sustainable awareness starts with educating children from an early age. It is known that consumers who are aware of the awareness of sustainability issues are less likely to purchase products that can harm nature (Aruga, 2020); the higher the awareness, the higher the purchasing awareness for sustainable or green products (Li et al, 2020).…”
