Is exploratory search different? A comparison of information search behavior for exploratory and lookup tasks

Abstract: Exploratory search is an increasingly important activity yet challenging for users. Although there exists an ample amount of research into understanding exploration, most of the major information retrieval (IR) systems do not provide tailored and adaptive support for such tasks. One reason is the lack of empirical knowledge on how to distinguish exploratory and lookup search behaviors in IR systems. The goal of this article is to investigate how to separate the 2 types of tasks in an IR system using easily mea… Show more

“…Students in particular utilize Google as a main source in information seeking . The requirements for evidence synthesis are not always obvious to reviewers as they are used to navigational or exploratory searching that comes intuitively . Students especially seem to have tremendous difficulty in mastering online literature searches .…”

“…To distinguish between exploratory and lookup search tasks Athukorala et al [2] conducted an user study with 32 participants from the computer sciences domain. The main objective of the study was to collect information on search behaviours to investigate how well different task types can be distinguished.…”

“…Recent works aim at characterizing the difficulty of search tasks and detecting variations in sessions. For instance, in [1], Athukorala et al proposed a method for distinguishing between exploratory phases and lookup phases in the context of Information Retrieval. Their idea consists in experimentally discovering features that can be used for this distinction.…”
